A friend was on a suspended sentence of 2.5 yrs for growing marijuana when he was convicted of abalone poaching and sentenced to 6 months. He managed to skip the country (Australia) before serving the 6 months. Is there a time limit after which he can return to Australia without having to face imprisonment for either charge?

Your friend did a runner ... If he returns he can be arrested at any point police may come into contact with him or a warrant for his arrest may be issued at any point his whereabouts become known. No time limits on serving a custodial sentence that I'm aware of.
