i received a medical bill from a helicopter company in relation to a rescue that occurred when i was over visting in New Zealand, it is a large substantial amount.
they are now treating to get debt collectors involved as several mouths have gone by please tell me what i can do to in terms of legal rights as i really dont have the money to pay the amount i supposebly owe,

If you are not travel-insured for it,
then you owe it personally, and you will have to pay it.

i had travel insurance, though they said i was not covered for it because i was not transpoted back to aus from the hospital

Do you hold a credit card? A lot of those issue a travel insurance when you use it overseas which you may be able to use to claim.

Well then, if that turns out to be true, then yes, you are personally liable for the costs.

And do check the credit card angle to which @James95 refers.
Long shot, but you may get lucky.
