My mum recently was instructed to go through an airport body detector, despite medical documentation. Do I have a claim?
So mum has Parkinson's Disease. She had an operation a year ago called "Deep Brain Stimulation" where metal rods are inserted into her brain, powered by a powerpack in her chest.
I made her up a folder with clear labels saying "Do not go through full body scanner - hand wand only". Inside the folder had an implant card with mum's details on it, and a letter from the medical company explaining that the patient cannot go through any scanner.
The scanner may mess up the delicate calibrations that controls her tremors. (Pacemakers are fine to go through the scanners)
The security guard took the paperwork to his boss, left my mum waiting, then came back and said "it wasn't good enough" and instructed her to walk through the full body detector.
I made a complaint to the airport. No response for two weeks even though I called several times asking for a return call. Marcus from Operations finally called me back only after this reporter called him in the morning!
Initially he was apologetic, but his letter after their "investigation" found they did nothing wrong! They claim that it wasn't a letter from a doctor. But their website just states you need "medical documentation".
Mum is ok. But she's $400 out of pocket for her neurosurgeon that she saw immediately after this. And stress and anxiety.
