Hi,

This evening in Coles I put a $6 item in the side pocket of my bag as I was walking round the store then picked up 2 items of which I paid for at the self service checkout. As I left the store I was stopped by a plain clothed person who declared herself as a loss prevention officer. I immediately declared I had made a mistake and presented them with the item in the side of my bag.

They took me over to the customer service and stated that they weren’t going to contact the police given the value and that I declared the item, but required me to complete a voulantary statement. I had to complete the form with the location, my ID details and a description of events, and they took a photo, they also scanned the item and attached a receipt to the statement probably to show the value. It was all very quick so I didn’t really question it much but they advised that because I was completing the form the police would not be informed, it was just for Coles records in case it happened again which I’m guessing then they would take to the police.

I’m just wondering if anyone has any advice on this please. By signing the statement will this just be kept with Coles and taken no further?

Thanks

What you signed most properly is a statement to the effect that you will not shop at Coles and if so, and do shoplift, it will be reported to police. This will stay with Coles only and may be in the system (nationwide) so if you go to other coles, you may enter and shop, but if you shoplift in any coles store, your name will show up and be reported to police, this is what I understand from reading previous posts here and others on the internet, hard lesson learned!

Hi,

Thanks for sharing this with me. I'm in the same situation as you. I was wondering if you heard anything from the police after that?

Thank you so much.

I read up about why they might take a photo and apparently they run face recognition. To see if you have offended any other times using the photo they took 😱
