Firstly, I work at Coles and everyday there are shoplifters going unnoticed even most obviously look shady.
Other times they are caught very bravely and the past few weeks the invoices have been very high, I.e 3k, 4k and yesterday 6k! Mostly dental products and meats.
They are then free to leave which is heartbreaking.
This is traumatising to watch, can the workplace be held responsible for causing us staff to witness this?

Today I was in kmart and left my large backpack and scooter at the entrance as the greeter let me.
I left 30 minutes or so later without buying anything and when grabbing my backpack and scooter, there was a different lady and she yelled at me saying 'you need to pay for them! Stop!' And I continued riding off yelling back 'I haven't bought anything' but didn't return to let her check the bag as didn't think she has the right and also knowing it is even in direct cctv view that I placed it down as soon as I entered, then as I left, didn't even attempt putting anything inside.
Whilst heading to the carpark, security approached and I thought they were after me or were notified but they were friendly and said make sure you don't ride it inside.

I'm worried they still reported me as a shoplifter or will somehow post my image online or report me to the police? I would like a defamation payout in that case.

Can they do that?
