In the case of motor vehicles, it can also be helpful to remember
that a licensed trader has an express statutory duty to guarantee
clear title in the vehicle(s) in which they deal.
Consider for example ss 96 and 97 of Motor Dealers and Chattel Auctioneers Act 2014 (Qld).

A lack of clear title is one of the most significant hazards
to which somebody who "buys privately" is exposed.

    Has the VIN been changed?

If the VIN wasn't changed, then I'd be wanting to know,
    1. how the VIN came up clean in all checks prior to purchase, and
    2. how the VIN apparently remained clean for whole year after purchase.

I'm curious because the time lapse here is extrordinary if it still has the original VIN. Assuming you transferred the rego soon after purchase, the red flag should have shown up 2 years ago.
