Recently I have had neighbours come to my door complaining that a finance company had phoned them. They wanted them (the neighbour) to tell me to contact the finance company. I feel that this breaches a privacy act. Does anyone have any thoughts on this matter?

I wouldn't do it. Let the finance company contact you themselves. Could be a scam.
