My mother has gone into a nursing home and her asset test shows her having around $300000 but she gave $220000 of that to my younger sister to buy a house which they would both live in. The Department Human Services (DHS) says that's a gift and still part of Mum's assets so the nursing home is charging her an extra $400 a week for accommodation. Mum doesn't have he cash to last a long time there, she is 85. My sister is not speaking to me and will not pay the extra money as it is in the house.
