I purchased a car and the seller told me and assured me the car was registered and showed me the receipt, went to nsw service Centre to transfer ownership and I was not told the car was unregistered, I got busted by the police and was told the car was unregistered. What do I do about this? Can I charge the payment back to the seller?
Given that the seller has already lied to you once,
your chances of the seller going "Woops, sorry, here's a bunch of of money..."
are pretty slim.
You have two realistic choices.
One - pay the fine, make this all be over, and move on with your life; or
Two - Court-elect the infringement, and take your chances with the Magistrate.

What exactly was the 'receipt'?
You want to establish that a reasonable person would have been fooled by this.... then its well worth taking to court.
If its just a failure on your part to be aware of facts a reasonable person would/should normally be aware of, then dont bother taking it to court, just pay the fine.
