Sorry, you have misinterpreted my post. I was giving a perspective to you that police and courts are likely to have. Not what I think at all.

Inadvertently I've walked out of a shop 2 or 3 times without paying and went back to pay so I know how easy it is to do.

So sorry for my brash reply in that case. I am so mortified by the situation! I am worried that the police will take the above view like you have mention but am hoping that given my clean record they might try and understand

Police may well take that view. Very hard to know what is best way to go if talking to police.

Either answer all questions, or say nothing at all are the two options. I can't say what is better in your situation. Much depends on the attitude of the police.
