NSW UK ETA or Standard Tourist visa

Has anyone had any experience with an ETA or Standard Tourist visa with a criminal record please
I was convicted 30 years ago and sentenced to 18 mths prison sentence
I applied for ETA which was denied due to sentence being over 12 mths but they suggested to apply for the Standard Tourist visa

As a general rule, ETAs, ESTAs, etc are for total cleanskins.
You're not one, so yeah, they are off the table.
You won't know about the Tourist Visa until you try.
