Just a general question about the lodgement of applications/forms to QCAT/courts etc. Is there a legal reason for why most applications/forms need to be lodged in person/by mail as opposed to online, or is it just a historical thing prior to the digital age?

Historical thing. Many courts and tribunals are starting to allow electronic lodging. In Queensland this is slowly progressing, but is often restricted to select groups (lawyers, insurance companies) and/or via a registration process, which precludes the one off type litigants.
