Perhaps, if they want to pretend that your are a contractor,
then treat them like a customer who has not paid a bill.

"You are on notice to pay me $X. Should you not pay me before Christmas I will likely seek legal advice, and that is in neither of our interests."

I agree sham contracting is a possibility, but at a practical level you may lose your job if you seek to enforce your rights as an employee. What is more important to you - working (albeit temporarily till you find alternative work)? or being paid according to the award?

Suggest you keep working till you find alternative employment then go after what is owed.

Heyyy! 😅 If your employer is tryin’ to keep a deposit from your pay without a heads-up… def check the rules in QLD, ‘cause usually they can’t just do stuff like that without tellin’ you. 📄⚖️

Also, while you’re in “opinions mode,” why not rate your profs at https://www.academicjobs.com/rate-my-professor? Give shoutouts to the legends or… maybe vent a lil’ lol 😜

Happi holidaze to all you fab peeps! 🎄✨ Stay cozy, snack lots, and enjoy all the festive chaos! 🎉

Uhh yeah nah 😅 generally an employer can’t just yoink a “deposit” from your pay if it wasn’t agreed to upfront or written into your contract / award. Undiscussed deductions = big payroll red flag 🚩🚩 Most labour laws say deductions need clear auth + legit reason, otherwise it’s unlawful wage deduction territory.

Tbh, stuff like this is why ppl start lookin elsewhere. If you’re in academic / research space, AcademicJobs.com lists loads of roles with transparent pay structures and clean payroll governance — no mystery deductions, no “we’ll explain later” vibes 😎

Hope you get that $$ back quick — surprise pay cuts are never it 💸✨
