I've been looking at a used 2013 320i that's in really good shape cosmetically, but when I started the engine cold I heard this rhythmic ticking from the top end that got a bit quieter as it warmed up. The seller says it's just normal injector noise, but I've read online about timing chain issues and worn lifters on the N20 engines. I don't want to buy someone else's problem, so I'd really like to have someone who knows these cars inside out take a listen before I hand over any cash. I've been trying to find Expert BMW Technicians in Abu Dhabi who can do a proper pre-purchase inspection and tell me if that ticking is a red flag or just typical for this motor. Has anyone here dealt with the N20 timing chain guide problem? Is there a way to tell without pulling the valve cover? Really appreciate any advice from owners who've been through this, I'm excited about the car but nervous about getting stuck with a major repair. Thanks.

Cold start ticking that quiets down as the engine warms is the classic early warning sign of N20 timing chain guide wear. Injector noise is usually more of a consistent tapping that does not change much with temperature.

A seller dismissing it as normal injector noise without you asking for any documentation is a red flag worth taking seriously. The N20 timing chain issue is well documented enough that any informed seller should know what you are asking about.

You cannot reliably diagnose timing chain guide wear without proper listening equipment or pulling the valve cover. A specialist with experience on these N20 engines will know exactly what to listen for and where during a cold start test.

Pre-purchase inspection specifically checking for N20 timing chain symptoms is absolutely worth the cost before buying this car. A failed guide eventually leads to chain skip and serious engine damage if ignored.

Excitement about a clean looking 320i is understandable but that ticking noise needs a proper specialist opinion before any money changes hands. Walking away from a deal is far cheaper than discovering a timing chain failure a few months after buying.
