NSW Using credit card transaction to track down a shoplifter

Hello. i was wondering, if someone shoplifts but legimately purchases an item in the same “transaction” with a credit/debit card, how does a store+police go about identifying the thief via the card transaction? Is it a relatively simple process? do banks typically help in these cases?
