My husband and I have separated after 17 years of marriage.

I purchased the house when I was young and paid the first 10 years on my own until we married and he came to live with me. We then shared expenses and had 2 children now aged 12 and 14.

My question is, how does the equity of property settlement of the home get split?

I do not want to leave the home and am hoping I can pay him out.

From my involvement in a recent divorce, it seems that it will come down to negotiation. There appears to be no magic pudding.
