Last week we privately bought a 2001 VW Camper. Although we had it mechanically inspected, the very next day it broke down. The mechanic’s verdict is a cost of $3,000-5,000 for the automatic transmission. What should be our options of action towards the seller and mechanic? Dan.

re: Mechanic. Unless you can prove the mechanic was negligent in some way, nothing. You'd need another mechanic's evidence to show why the first was negligent.

re: Seller. Unless you can prove they knew the transmission was faulty, nothing. May be call the mechanics who previously serviced the car.

I could sell my car today not knowing of any serious mechanical issues and the transmission could breakdown next week. I shouldn't be responsible for that happening when I have no way of knowing the transmission was on its way out.
