Various State Governments have modified the common law so the police claim title in the stolen property. See my first post on this thread.
You'll have to point out to me where in the Queensland legislation
it says things that are stolen become forfeited.
Typically, forfeiture involves police taking possession of an item
that is ether a tool of crime, or a proceed of crime.

--> I'm sure there's a bit of Queensland legislation - somewhere - about what to do
when, after making genuine efforts, they can't find the owner.
But that's unlikely in the case of an item that was both stolen in fact,
and actually reported stolen, by the relevant owner.
In any event, it appears that their effort paid off - the actual owner turned up.
