I'm coming to Melbourne airport from the US and I would like to bring a toy gun that shoots salt to kill flies for a friend on a farm. ( you have to be almost on top of the fly to kill it ) You can shoot yourself in the hand without hurting yourself. Will I be in trouble bringing it there ?

See the customs website, they would have all the items that are allowed or not, better yet, you can email them. this is the best way to find out.
You don't want to risk bringing anything not allowed as you maybe fined, giving the answer "I did not know" will not help you.
