Hi

I used to do a course online through open colleges like a a year ago, but the thing about it is that I never completed it. Well, today I’ve received a letter from that college saying that I owe them $3,046.88. I don’t have a job and they want me to pay in full in 10 days.

I don’t have that kind of money laying around. This debt is referred to debt recoveries. How’s even that possible, cause a friend of mine told me if you never completed it and never received any certificate out of it, why I should be owing money?

I’d like to know what I can do about this situation.

Why would you owe money? Look at what you're actually paying for. While it may be the case that you're focused on the end result, any education is a process of learning. That's what you're paying for. The 'certificate' is just the final acknowledgment of what you're achieved along the way. That aside, the education institution has put in an amount of work to get you some of the way along and the law recognises they should be compensated for that work.

Saying you shouldn't pay because you didn't get the certificate simply won't get you anywhere in the legal system. Whether $3,046.88 is a legitimate amount to pay is a different question.

Accept you'll have to pay something. Figure out if the amount is reasonable. If it's not, challenge them on it. If it is, make reasonably arrangements to pay. If they're sensible, and you stick to it, you should be able to work it out.

Maybe you can find a way to complete the study - it may be worth it in the long run.

Does your friend like you? Giving advice like that is only confusing you as to what you need to do. Maybe completing the course might have been of value and helped you get a job. Being out of work is no excuse to not settle debts.

Listen to Rob.
