I've learned today that approximately 3 weeks ago, work was carried out in my office which uncovered and disturbed a significant black mould population. The airborne components were visible and office staff were made to work through it covering their mouths, etc. The removal of the floor surface that uncovered the mould was replaced by another carpet tiled surface and no other treatment was given. Also of note, a longer duration issue of some months that the roof has been leaking with no resolution which one would assume without doubt contributed to the issue.

I was only made aware of it today and raised the issue with management. Whilst I was informed that the leak in the roof was fixed today, I was accused of having underlying reasons for raising the health issue for some unknown reason where I addressed it with genuine concern for the health of myself and my colleagues. Whilst cause is unproven, one staff member was diagnosed with bacterial pneumonia and hospitalised, Doctors suggest the probability of exposure to the black mould being causative to the condition is high.

Can anyone give recommendations on next steps under employment law?

Report it to your local health department. Black mould is a serious health issue and needs proper treatment. Not sure if it council or state issue. What state are you in?

BTW, the sick employee should be making Workcover enquiries.

In SA. Many staff have been ill since, this is the most serious case and will advise. I'm hoping they take the issue serious tomorrow, my thoughts are the workplace should be quarantined until the issue is fixed?
