Starting New Company - Quit Job First?

Hi there,
I am working in a spare parts company. I want to start my own business in spare parts marketing. Should I quit the job first? And if yes, under contract law, how long after I leave can start my own business?

What does your employment contract say? There is usually a non-compete / restraint of trade clause in most contracts.
