Hi,

we have a common fence, and on the neighbor's side a privacy screen is attached, the screen extends perhaps 1/2 a meter above the common fence.

Not sure when the privacy screen was added but it was before the current owners bought the house next door, and probably before we bought it, so 10+ years ago.

We recently painted, our side of the privacy fence, as in our mind, because it was attached the the common fence, it formed part of the main fence.

The neighbors have now complained that we painted it without consulting them because the structure is entirely contained on their side, in fact, we had no right to paint.

We have not damaged the screen, so their stance is a matter of legal principle if their position is correct.

Have we, in fact, by our own ignorance, done the wrong thing, and what course of action would be recommended?

Kind Regards,

AJ.
