My father recently died and I'm a beneficiary in his will with my younger brother and sister.

I've been told by the Public Trustee QLD (who held the will) that I need probate. What is probate? Do we need to get probate? How do we get probate?

If the public Trustee is acting as the executor they will take care of every thing for probate (paper work).
Probate is just the process where the will is said to be valid and the person is passed away, then the executor can take over the estate and begin to do what the will asks. Not all estates need probate (eg very small) and this varies from state to state.

FYI Finalizing an estate always take longer that people expect.
