My husband and I were married in Las Vegas about ten years ago. There is no record of the marriage in Australia but I understand we are legally wed. We were looking at a divorce by mutual consent in the Dominican Republic. We have no children and are agreeable on property settlement.

I was wondering if anyone else has taken this path and could advise me or share their experience.

Thank you for your time.

Dear Trish,

if you are concerned about what your status would be in Australia...both marriages and divorces registered in foreign jurisdictions are recognised in Australia. So as far as Australia is concerned, you are currently validly married and if you obtained a lawful divorce in Dominican, then you will be validly divorced in Australia.

Thanks for your reply, Sophea. That's how I was understanding it. If anyone out there has a recommendation for a Dominican divorce experience, I'd love to hear.
