Can someone please help me with a bit of guidance on this?

I have 2 criminal convictions for possession of a prescription medication without a prescription & failing to attend community service.
And I have 1 driving offence.

I have experience in retail and hospitality so those are the areas that I have been applying for. Whenever I am applying for a job and I have to answer this question:

Have you ever had a criminal conviction, or had a criminal offence proven against you?
or something similar, I have no idea what I am supposed to say.

None of my convictions are relevant to the positions I am applying for. I take full responsibility for my actions and I have accepted the consequences.

I am actually unsure whether or not I am legally required to answer these questions, given the circumstances.
And are employers allowed to ask these questions in SA? I know the law varies from state to state.
