Recently I wanted to install a fence on our small front yard.
I contacted the council twice and spoke to someone from planning and building and were told by both departments that I would not require a permit. I even doubled check with a building surveyor before going ahead with building, and got written confirmation that I would not require a permit for my fence specifications and my address (this was included in my email).
Since this, we have installed a fence and now the council has sent an enforcement team and is requesting us to remove the fence because the planning permit for our property to be built originally was only allowed if fences weren't built on the property.

My first question: Can the council now, even after giving written confirmation saying we can build a fence, make us remove it?
My second question: What should I do from here?
