I received a 'fail to stop at red light' traffic infringement notice.

In the first photo, you can see clearly that I was initially in a right turning lane and the red arrow to turn right was visible on the traffic light. The traffic light to drive straight through was green. I remember getting into the wrong lane which was the right turning lane. I then realised this and since the straight through traffic light was green and there was no traffic by my side or even behind me that were driving straight through from the left lane at the time, I indicated left and drove through the intersection at an angle moving to the left while crossing the intersection, to go straight on.

This is how it is seen in the second photo where my car is in the middle of the intersection where there are no lines marked but you can see it is halfway across towards the left side so I can drive straight through.

I called the police and they explained that I cannot cross over from the right to the left while going through the intersection even if it was a green light as I was initially in the right turning lane facing a red arrow.

Would it be worth electing to go to a court hearing?

They have given you the wrong offence. You have not disobeyed the traffic light. Up to you whether you contest it, they may give you the correct charge of failing to obey lane markings.
