Non-government School engaged a psychologist to write a report about a child who was having behavioural issues. The report was written and parent advised they would be Cc'd a copy. Report has been completed & school has it but has not provided to parent of child. parents have still not seen said report after 6-12mths. How does parent get access to that report?

Is it your child?

The parents could ask the psychologist.

I assume the parents gave their permission for a behavioural assessment and requested the report at the time of giving approval. The school appears to have broken their agreement with the parents and the parents can take the school to court for the release of the report.

@Tim W Does it matter if the child belongs to my friend or myself, I'm just asking the question
Well, since you ask, quite frankly, if it's not your child, then it's not your problem, nor any of your business.

Have you formally asked somebody senior from the school's management?
By that I mean more than making a phone call the "the office"
and being brushed off by some secretary?

What kind of non-government school? Catholic?

Make an appointment to come in and be given the report.
People are pretty good at being hard-nut on the phone,
but it's harder face to face.

@Tim W - Yes it is a Catholic school. There was a meeting at the Catholic school and present were the parents, the school principal, a regional representative & a solicitor from the diocesan office representing the school. Both Parents specifically asked (in person) for a copy of the report and it was never produced. They said it was the property of the school.

Hi @Rod - yes the parents did give their permission for the psychologist report and contributed to information contained in that report - they were informed at the time of consent that they would be given a copy of same report once completed, however that did not eventuate. Parents would like copy as it is directly about their child

@Tim W - Yes it is a Catholic school.
I suspected as much.
As an institution, the Catholic Church thinks itself above the law, except when it suits them to hide behind it.
...present were the parents, the school principal, a regional representative & a solicitor from the diocesan office...
That's an array of church heavies whose presence is clearly intended to intimidate the parents
It also suggests to me that the principal is either out of her/his depth, or not really in charge.
hey said it was the property of the school.
In strict literal terms, if they commissioned it and paid for it, then that's quite likely to be true.
But if your consent was given on the basis that you would be given a copy,
then, subject to numerous ifs, buts, maybes and variables,
you may have grounds to get an order for it's "production" to you.
Have you actually asked for a copy from the psychologist?

Obviously there is a significant back story to this matter.
Has your child been to a psychologist of your own choosing?
Better yet, has your child been to see a psychiatrist?
(I ask because psychologists are to mental health as physiotherapists are to orthopaedics).

I suggest that it's probably time for an alternative medical opinion about your child,
and to get yourself a lawyer who can assist with access to the documents procured by the Church.
It's my experience that where there is one lawyer, there almost always has to be another.
I further suggest no more phone calls or conversations - communicate only by letter
(that is, on paper, not email).
