I have just purchased a vehicle today privately and was told by the seller that the air-conditioning needed re-gassing. I've just been told by the air conditioning mechanic that the compressor is not engaging and will need to be replaced at the cost of $1900, plus other mechanical problems which I was not made aware of.

I have asked for a full refund of my money, only to be told "no."

Where do I stand under Australian Consumer Law?

Probably nowhere. You said this is is a private sale, therefore it is not covered by the ACL.

However the purchase of the car is a contract and covered by common law. You may have an action under common law depending on what was said before sale and what was in the description of the ad selling the car and the terms of the sale. Probably need a lawyer for this.
