Hi,

I am have leased an office for 5 years, which has been month to month for over 2 years. I said I would stay until Jan 2017 in an email but I want to go now. Am I obliged to pay the lease until the end of January or just till end of month?

If its a month to month lease and you haven't signed a contract to say you will stay until Jan 2017 then I would say you can just provide the 1 month's notice. You are describing it as a month to month lease so I am assuming that your dealings with the landlord and / or your conversations with him have lead you to conclude this. If a court were to decide this it would be considering what the parties intended to be the legal agreement between them, so while i can't say without knowing all the facts, if it is a month to month lease then you are only required to give a month's notice.
