Can starting defamation legal proceedings
for false accusations against a witness in a criminal matter be considered inimidating a witness when you are the accused?

They made false accusation leading to me getting charged with an offence - damage property.
Year had nearly expired to start proceeding so sent concerns notice to witness.
Now cops been trying to speak to me, but will not tell me what it is about.

You can start proceedings, however the other side may point to criminal proceedings and ask the judge to defer a trial. Similar to what happened in Craig McLachlan's case.

So now, you want to avenge yourself on the criminal complainant
with a defamation action?
I think not.

Because intimidating witnesses is an offence in itself.
And because making a complaint of criminal conduct (to an appropriate authority) is not defamation.
