VIC Other people's possessions in your property for long period of time ?

Hi just wondering if there is a certain time limit of other people's possessions in your property before it belongs to the property owner ?

The story is my old man is currently a tow truck driver, about 3 years ago he picked up a mate of mine's car that he crashed. Since then they have moved state and I can not get in contact with them. Should I take this further or hold off ?
