Can a life member who pays the dues also be an ordinary member? Under our constitution life members do not have voting rights while ordinary financial members do. The organisation is a NFP ( Not for Profit) incorporated association.

Further, if this member does not have voting rights, does this also prevent him from nominating other members for election to the Management Committee? The constitution says under 19 (1) (a) "any 2 members of the association may nominate another member (the candidate) to serve as a member of the management committee".

    Hi David,

You will need to defer to the organisation's constitution on this one. Can you talk to a board member or chairperson about this?

No, the Management Committee is the problem.

One of our members was made a life member and life members do not have a vote. Ordinary members do. This member, however, has maintained his financial status as an ordinary member. Ordinary members do have a vote and there is nothing in the constitution that prevents a person from having both types of membership. The Management Committee is maintaining that this person is not only not able to vote by virtue of his life membership but cannot also nominate or second a nomination for a position on the Management Committee. The constitution says that any member can nominate another for a position on the MC. It does not specify the type of membership. Hence the questions
