On my partner's marriage certificate, it says 'never validly married' for him and 'divorced' for his ex. Is he legally married and does he need to apply for a divorce from her or can he get remarried without a divorce?

    They had a ceremony.

That means his ex was married at some time in the past and was divorced at the time she remarried. He will still need to apply for a divorce before he is allowed to remarry.

Hi Kes, "never validly married" is referring to before he was married to his ex.
