Hi.

I have been a Permanent resident in Australia for over 30 years and have decided to apply for my citizenship.

I have broken the law over 10 years ago, slapped with a fine with no recorded conviction. I was advised by the court lawyer that I was legally allowed to say I have no criminal conviction, as I did not have a criminal record. I have been law bidding since, not even a speeding ticket.

I done some research on the citizenship requirement recently and only learnt that even when the charge was not recorded, I should tick "Yes" on the criminal question when I renew my Resident Return Visa. I am petrified now, as I have ticked "No" to the criminal question, believing that I am legally allowed to say I have no criminal conviction.

What will happen to me if I proceed with applying for my citizenship?

Would I be deported because of this mistake?

Would someone be able to advise me on this matter?
