To my surprise, I was named executor and sole beneficiary in my uncle's will, but I need his solicitor to apply for a Grant of Probate as I can't do it myself. The solicitor sent me the estimated costs. Is the estate liable for these fees?

You really mean "Do you have to pay the solicitor out of my pocket?"
---> You are the client, so yes. But the estate can almost always reimburse you.
But I also suggest that you shop around before signing up with the only solicitor in the village.
