I recently raised my hand for a promotion, but a coward fake Facebook profile made derogatory comments regarding my private life - totally false. My reputation has been damaged as a result & I wish to pursue the fake Facebook account for defamation.

How do I go about this? Who can gain information from Facebook about the fake account? The Police? My solicitor?

This is not a DIY.
Before you do anything else, have a conversation with a solicitor.

As Tim has said above, your first step should be to speak to a defamation law firm to determine if defamation has actually occurred in the first place. Because if it hasn't and you haven't got a defamation matter that is worth proceeding with, you would be wasting police time and resources on something that will never eventuate.
