We currently have road construction on our front boundary, widening the road from 2 to 4 lanes, relocating services etc. We have a retaining wall at the front which retains the fill of the road approx 800 mm above the natural height of the land, this appears to be rising by between 10 - 15 cms, based on the raising of water meter boxes etc. This means the wall will need to be raised to approx 1m in places. Whose responsibility is it to retain a council road? Given the increase of traffic flow and the fact the road is about 45 cms closer to our property, I believe that a retaining wall would have to be engineer designed.

You’ll most likely find that the structural works needed will already have factored. Given the type of road it appears you’re talking about, I think it may be a ‘main’ road and therefore fall under the Department of Transport and Main Roads. A call to them or Council (whoever it ends up being) should be able to tell you what’s going to happen. They will have undertaken civil engineer reporting before commencement.

Generally speaking, any retaining wall in Queensland of 1m or more requires a building approving. One that is subject to increased load even more so.
