Homework Question - Doctrine of Stare Decisis Synonymous with Doctrine of Precedent?

In class, we have learned about and often refer to the 'doctrine of precedent' in problem-solving tasks. However, in my readings I just came upon the 'Doctrine of stare decisis' which appears to be the same as the doctrine of precedent? Are these two doctrines in any way different or are they synonymous?
