In class, we have learned about and often refer to the 'doctrine of precedent' in problem-solving tasks. However, in my readings I just came upon the 'Doctrine of stare decisis' which appears to be the same as the doctrine of precedent? Are these two doctrines in any way different or are they synonymous?

Thanks, any help would be greatly appreciated!

Yes, they're the same. Law loves Latin terminology, but the most common term used in Australia is precedent, rather than stare decisis.
