I hired a man to chop down four trees and grind the stumps quoted at $1800. He chopped down one tree and was to return the next day. He never showed up and for the next week, I repeatedly called and sent text messages to him and all were unanswered, so I hired another man to finish the job quoted $1700, which he completed.

Now a month later, the original man has billed me for $220 for the work he did. Do I have to pay him under Australian Consumer Law as this takes the cost of the job to over $1900?

Doesn't seem an unreasonable cost for the cutting down of one tree assuming it was of a reasonable/comparable size to the others.

His quote may have been cheaper than others you received so it may not have cost you any more to engage the second tradie.

Though I'd be sending payment of $100 as full payment for the stuffing around he caused and see what he does.
