We have built a new home on a block of land when all our neighboring properties were still vacant. At the time of our build, there saw no requirement for a retaining wall on either sides of the property. A few months later, one of our neighbors started their build and suddenly demanded a retaining wall to be built along the boundary of our properties.

This is giving us so much stress at the moment as we cant find any reference to a similar instance. Would appreciate your input on who needs to place the retaining wall as our builder is insisting when we started our build there was no retaining walls required based on the current terrain of the soil.

We don't mind paying 50/50 but our neighbor is implying we should shoulder the entire cost. Height difference would be 0.2-0.5 meters
Thank you.

Hi
On the facts which you have presented it does not appear that you have filled the site so as to build on.
I suggest that you simply maintain your position to the neighbour that you disagree with him and let him continue with his building works.
Let him chase the rabbit out of the warren hole.
Ensure that you take regular photos and video as evidence.

Agree with above comment, it’s up to them to get the dollars out of you.

Who benefits out of this retaining wall ? Do you get an improvement in your land, ie sloping land being converted to flat. As cost are normally proportioned by the the benefit each property gets.

if the retaining wall is solely on thier land, then you would most likely, not need to contribute funds.
