My employer has requested that I send unsolicited emails, and according to this website that's illegal. The nature of the emails is commercial as we are trying to find distributors or dealers for a product.

Am I within my employee rights to refuse to do that?

If the Employer's direction is not lawful and reasonable you have a right not to follow it and if you find that your employment is jeopardised you have a solid General protections/ unfair dismissal claim.

Where do you currently stand on the issue ?

I was advised - by a friend - to just do it. I'm currently looking for another job, so I'm hoping there won't be much backlash from any spam I send, and that I can a better job soon.

You can refuse, and if they fire you, you can sue them for wrongful termination.
