A physically disabled woman was seriously assaulted by several security guards at a WA hospital. They seem to have beaten her unconscious and then left her on the footpath outside the hospital, because that's where she woke up. A short time after she woke up, she saw two police officers leaving the hospital. She called them over and asked to make a statement about the assault. The officers refused to take a statement, saying that they 'already had the whole story from the security guards'. The woman was later charged with and convicted of assault (for apparently hurting one of the guard's fingers). Would the refusal of police to take her statement and conduct a proper investigation create grounds to appeal the conviction? Does anyone know of an organisation in WA that provides legal assistance for wrongful convictions or people with disabilities at a reduced price?
