We recently had a settlement on some land in Brisbane & the solicitor office told us, in writing, the transfer stamp duty would be $7000. However, on the morning of settlement, the solicitor's office told us that was wrong and it was $14000.

We had to find that extra money for settlement. Is there anything we can do about this discrepancy?

Hi Annnguyen909,

Whilst it is very inconvenient that this happened, and negligent of the solicitors who calculated it, it does not change the fact that the stamp duty is $14,000 and you were always going to have to pay that amount. The solicitor's negligence didn't, in fact, cost you any more and you, therefore, did not suffer "loss" per se. Therefore as irritating as it is. I would say no, this is not something worth pursuing.
