I think they're all having you on. According to AutoGuru (I have no idea how reliable that site is), a head gasket replacement should start at around $1200. Quoting $3000+ up front sounds like they're charging for repairs that they don't even know will be needed and probably won't be performed.

It's the actual dealership it will be sad is they are doing that as they said they are taking out the engine and fully stripping it out .. I did try other Subaru specialist and got a similar quote just a couple hundred cheaper !

I’m no expert on cars, but I did used to have a Liberty GT. Some Subaru models are known to have head gasket issues. If you’re only driving it as a weekend car, I’d assume you’re giving it a decent workout and then letting it sit idle for almost a week. As Scruff pointed out, that’s not good for wear and tear.

In terms of cost, $3k is on the higher side but it can depend on what else has to be done. I’d also think that if your model has a boxer engine this may be more expensive that an ordinary head gasket replacement.

Hi Rob
So do I have any ground with my appeal to subaru Australia if it's a common issue

No. You’re outside their warranty period, and as a ‘known issue’ you can be inferred to have bought the car capable of being reasonably aware of the issue had you done sufficient research.
