My fiancee is an American citizen. He would like to live in Australia for a year before we move to the US. We were planning on getting married when we are in the US after that year. Which visa would be most appropriate to allow him to live and work in Australia for a year?

I would have said a prospective marriage visa but that is only good for 9 months and if you don't get married within that time it can not be extended. Your best option might be a standard work and holiday visa (subclass 462) Some information can be found at this website: Work and Holiday visa (subclass 462)

There are rules around it. It is only a 12 month visa, he must be aged between 18 and 31. The department of Immigration and boarder protection are usually pretty helpful if you want to discuss your options and what might be the best visa because it will also depend on what your fiancé plans on doing while he is here.
