Someone I know has shoplifted at a store near her school. She took some minor goods (worth under $100), but has been repetitively doing it for the past few weeks. The police contacted her parents and told her that she was being investigated and that she was to be detained at home until the investigation finishes. Is this allowed, and what does it mean for her? This is the second time the police have been involved, a year ago, she stole some jewellery from another place. She was let off with a warning. What are the possible outcomes for her? What should she do?

She should stop stealing.
Chances of this going to court and getting her a criminal record? very low. But heed the warnings. The cops have you on file and if you're caught again the priors will not help the situation.
