Can my employer verbally advise me that my employment contract has been terminated? Then in the same discussion advise me not to return to work the following business day?

Yes. Though it should be followed up with something in writing asap (eg the next day).

You may have grounds for unfair dismissal. Depends on your circumstances (eg length of employment, casual/permanent, warnings etc).
